Zebulon Pike Bicentennial |
|
2006-2007 marked the bicentennial of Lieutenant Zebulon Montgomery Pike's expedition up the Arkansas River & down into Mexico (then New Spain.)
I participated in several events throughout the fall & winter 2006-2007 to celebrate this. Putting together costumes & learning the music of the time was a major part of it. I also made a recording of songs of Pike's era with my friends Don Richmond & Rex Rideout.
There were many events throughout southeastern Colorado in January 2006 that went into 2007. The main site to find out all things Pike is The Pike Page from the Santa Fe Trail Association. Other sites which I used as a resource or other folks involved in this project were:
Organizations Union Avenue Historic District Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum Santa Fe Trails Scenic and Historic Byway Southeastern Colorado Heritage Center Historical Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo Local History Center - Caņon City
Pike History Zebulon Pike: Hard-Luck Explorer Zebulon Pike: Hard-Luck Explorer or Successful Spy?
Pike Journals The Southwestern Journals of Zebulon Pike, 1806-1807 - brand new southwestern journal of Pike expedition by my friend, Mark Gardner. This is the only journal of Pike available that is currently in print! American Journeys - pdf's of original journals
